Assessing the Potential Benefits and Challenges of Cocoa Agroforestry Adoption in Ghana’s Western-North Region

This study explores the potential benefits and challenges of cocoa agroforestry adoption in five Theobroma cacao-growing communities Ghana’s Western-north region. Cocoa is a farming practice that combines cultivation with tree planting. It an essential approach to mitigate effects climate change, reduce forest loss, alleviate poverty; however, its not widespread within Ghanaian communities. The used mixed-method approach, including semi-structured questionnaire (n = 150), interviews, focus group discussions gather data. results suggest farmers’ willingness integrate species on their farms significantly influenced by factors such as gender, age, level education, or land ownership. Terminalia superba, Khaya spp., Milicia excelsa were more common non-cocoa trees found, farmers demonstrated good knowledge understanding agroforestry. main motivation for plant was build resilience, supplement income, improve food security, restore degraded lands. However, barriers adopting agroforestry, identified farmers, lack financial support, high transportation costs seedlings, insufficient technical support awareness. recommends raise seedlings receive incentives cash, inputs, pension scheme encourage greater REDD+ strategy at cocoa-growing
